What is a River Basin?

A river basin is the area drained by a river and its tributaries. North Carolina has 17 river basins. Some of North Carolina's river basins are completely contained within the state's borders, some extend upstream or downstream into Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia or South Carolina. All of North Carolina's river basins eventually send their water into either the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean. (DEHNR, Office of Environmental Education)
